About the Roadmap Initiative
Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc. (PCSI), the city’s federally designated anti-poverty agency, proudly announces the launch of its newest initiative: Roadmap, an intensive economic mobility coaching model to guide individuals and families on a long-term journey toward self-sufficiency.
Roadmap offers Pittsburgh residents personalized, wraparound support on their journey to self-sufficiency. Through this program, participants receive comprehensive assessments, dedicated one-on-one coaching, and tailored services that focus on long-term success – from securing stable housing and increasing income to improving health, education, and overall well-being. Grounded in brain science and a deep understanding of the realities faced by low-income households, Roadmap participants and their PCSI coach develop plans and pathways, breaking down ambitious goals into achievable steps. Progress is incentivized and every milestone, no matter how small, is celebrated to build confidence, sustain momentum, and boost the brain’s natural rewiring toward positive patterns.
“Roadmap is more than a program; it’s a commitment,” said Sarah Cook, Executive Director of PCSI. “We believe in people’s ability to achieve their goals when coupled with the right support, the right coach, and the right approach. We’re proud to partner with our neighbors as they set their direction to a sustainable future filled with opportunity, dignity, and hope.”
Key features of the Roadmap Program
Intensive Coaching: Ongoing, personalized coaching and whole-family support focused on stability and mobility goals. The customer-coach partnership is organized around five core domains essential to building household strength. Frequent check-ins begin with weekly meetings, which transition to monthly report outs, reflecting participants’ growing stability and sustained achievement.
Continual Assessment: Progress is tracked through self-assessment, where participants use a visual scale to reflect on their growth, identify areas for adjustment, and stay focused on their goals.
Incentives that Work: Customized roadmaps are co-created with participants. Progress toward meaningful goals is celebrated through brain-based strategies that reinforce motivation and forward movement, and that strengthen participants’ ability to navigate life’s competing priorities and make consistently informed choices that support their long-term goals.
Comprehensive Program Support: Roadmap participants gain access to PCSI’s full suite of services, including emergency assistance, referrals to housing, transportation, and childcare, food security, employment, education, and training programs.
