Pittsburgh Job Corps Offers Free Medical Trades Training for Young Adults

Posted on: October 20, 2026

Explore Healthcare Career Training Through Job Corps

Young adults interested in healthcare careers may be able to receive free education, career training, and support through the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center.

Job Corps is a U.S. Department of Labor program serving eligible young adults ages 16-24. The Pittsburgh Job Corps Center offers several Medical Trades training programs designed to help participants build practical skills, earn industry-recognized credentials, and prepare for employment in healthcare settings.

Current Medical Trades opportunities include:

Clinical Medical Assistant

The Clinical Medical Assistant program prepares students for administrative and clinical work in physicians’ offices, hospitals, and other healthcare settings.

Training may include taking vital signs, recording patient medical histories, assisting with examinations, preparing blood samples, and other patient care responsibilities.

Participants can work toward earning the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician program prepares students for work involving blood collection and other laboratory and diagnostic services.

Students learn skills related to collecting blood and other specimens, preparing samples for testing, maintaining equipment, and following proper safety and collection procedures. Participants may have opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials.

Rehabilitation Technician

The Rehabilitation Technician program is designed for students interested in helping people recover from injuries and illnesses.

Training includes supporting patient care under the direction of physical therapists, assisting with mobility and medical equipment, observing treatment, and helping patients understand post-rehabilitation routines.

Participants can also earn First Aid and CPR certifications.

More Than Career Training

Job Corps provides more than occupational training. Depending on eligibility and individual needs, participants may also have access to:

  • Assistance earning a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Residential living
  • Meals and basic medical care
  • Hands-on training and internship opportunities
  • A living allowance
  • Career counseling and ongoing employment support
  • Opportunities to earn additional credentials and life skills, including a driver’s license

Who May Be Eligible?

Applicants generally must:

  • Be between 16 and 24 years old
  • Meet Job Corps income and eligibility requirements
  • Be interested in education, career training, and personal development
  • Be willing to participate in the program and work toward educational and career goals

Additional eligibility requirements may apply, and some Medical Trades programs have their own academic, testing, or other requirements. A Job Corps admissions representative can help prospective students determine eligibility and understand the next steps.
